“Whoever is patient has great understanding,
but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.”
~Prov 14: 29
I am not a very patient person and I do not live in a very patient culture. I want what I want NOW! And Amazon makes me believe that it is a reasonable expectation! Adel Bestavros, who was a prominent Egyptian lawyer and leader in the Coptic church, said “patience with others is love, patience with self is hope, patience with God is faith.”
As I live longer in this world, I see how my impatience negatively impacts those around me. For example, when things don’t go exactly the way that I want, I certainly am not loving to those around me and I question God’s goodness or love for me. When I am impatient with my kids or I spend more money that I should, I can lose hope that I am ever going to change. Thanks be to God that he is gracious and compassionate, slow-to anger (patient), and abounding in love and faithfulness!
I wish that I could tell myself to be more patient and I would be. Wouldn’t that be nice. Rather, patience comes by turning our eyes on Jesus and understanding how much love he has for us, how patient he has been with us and as that sinks deeper and deeper into our hearts and minds, by the help of the Holy Spirit we can become more patient like him! Exhibiting Faith, Hope, and Love!
