Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her…her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her.
~Prov. 3:13-15, 17-18a
In chapter two the author of Proverbs tells us that the pursuit of wisdom produces moral clarity. Now in chapter three, we learn that wisdom brings peace and tranquility. Though we know that money can’t buy us love, and it certainly can’t buy us moral clarity, it also can’t buy us peace. Peace comes from walking with God, from living life rightly. The one who gains wisdom has something more valuable than what money can buy in this world; peace, contentment, joy and most of all life forever. Jesus, who is the embodiment of wisdom, is the one who ultimately gives us life. He walked with God, he lived life rightly and it cost him his life, so that we might have life forever with him.
Dear Jesus, thank you that you offer us peace, joy and life because of your faithfulness and your love for us. As we seek to walk with you, make us people who extend peace and joy and the promise of life to those around us so that they might know you. Help us not to live for money as the source of our comfort, but reorient our hearts towards you. Thank you for the peace that comes from your presence, the joy that fills us because of your sacrificial love, and most of all the promise of life after death. Amen.
